Take for instance his tips on planting roses. Here’s what he recommends:

Planting your roses so they thrive is simple when you follow these easy steps.

Dig a hole about one foot deep. Then place some well decayed compost or rotten down manure in the bottom of the hole. Next, put your rose plant squarely in the hole and check the depth of your rose plant’s collar. The collar is the area of the rose between the highest roots and where the rose branches out. You want the collar of your rose plant to only just be covered with soil.

If the collar is too far below the surface then you must take the rose out and place some extra soil in the hole. If the collar is too high above ground level then you need to take some soil out of the hole.

Next make sure the rose plant is square and work some fine soil amongst the roots. To get the soil around the roots you may have to lightly shake the rose plant. Afterwards you can fill in the hole and firm the soil around the rose plant. When firming the soil you can’t damage the rose plant’s roots.

One last thing: Loosen up the top layer of soil with a fork. Then scatter over a thin layer of manure. That’s it.

Anyway Kent Council ordered Walter Wright to record his encyclopaedic knowledge of growing roses for the other Council’s gardeners. It would be his legacy to them. So Kent County would continue to have beautiful roses for decades to come.
